Read Memorial Lecture: The Spirit of Liberty DESCRIPTION:±«Óătv the Lecture: \nThe Read Lecture series was inaugurated in 1975 to honour the memory of the late Horace E Read\, OC\, QC\, Dean of ±«Óătv Law School from 1950-1964\, in recognition of his contribution to legal education and legal scholarship.\nDr. Read's areas of interest were broad: law reform\, legislation and the legislative process\, conflict of law\, labour law and legal education\, and this is well reflected in the diversity of the lectures.\n\n±«Óătv the Topic: \nThe celebrated judge Learned Hand delivered a speech in 1944 in which he suggested that Americans tend to put too much faith in lawyers and legal institutions. "Liberty lies in the hearts of men\," he said. "When it dies there\, no constitution\, no law\, no court can even do much to help it."\nIn this address\, Canadian human rights lawyer Jameel Jaffer\, who directs the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University\, asks what Judge Hand's observation can tell us about the United States' astonishing\, precipitous descent into illiberalism over the past year.\n\nCost: No cost.\n\nAdditional Information: Please register online.\n\nContact Information: lawdean@dal.ca LOCATION:Weldon Law Building\, Room W104\n6061 University Ave. URL:/faculty/law/news-events/events/2026/01/28/read_lecture.html UID:/faculty/law/news-events/events/2026/01/28/read_lecture/_jcr_content/contentPar/dcalfacultyevent.html END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
