Prof. Chongyin Yang

Dr. Chongyin Yang is the Tesla Canada Chair and an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science at ±«Óătv University. He leads a research group that works in close collaboration with the teams of Dr. Jeff Dahn and Dr. Michael Metzger, forming a strong, integrated battery research program. Supported by their exclusive industrial partner, Tesla Inc., their collective efforts focus on the materials physics and chemistry of energy storage systems, with the goal of developing lithium-ion batteries that offer higher energy density, longer cycle life, lower cost, improved safety, and enhanced sustainability.
Dr. Yang earned his Ph.D. in Materials Physics and Chemistry from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He subsequently joined the University of Maryland as a Research Scientist (2015–2020), where he worked on high-energy aqueous lithium-ion batteries and next-generation battery chemistries.
Dr. Yang’s academic contributions include over 100 peer-reviewed publications (with >20,000 citations and an H-index of 52), 16 patents, and more than 10 invited presentations at international conferences. His research excellence has been recognized through several prestigious awards, including the ±«Óătv President’s Research Excellence Award – Emerging Investigator, the University of Maryland’s 2021 Invention of the Year Award, the Chinese Academy of Sciences President’s Award, and the Dongsheng Yan Academic Special Scholarship.
