Located right next to the main entry to the Idea Building, the Heavy Protype lab is a key location for student teams. This is where many teams work collaboratively to build their competition entries.

How do I gain access?

Request a tour and training session with the Shop Supervisor (Mark MacDonald). These sessions are available between 7am and 2pm. Following the tour, you need to demonstrate to the Shop Supervisor that you:

• understand HPL operating practices.
• have WHMIS training.
• understand the instructions for the use of hand tools.
• understand the training on specific machines (not all are available for student use, see list below).
• have fire safety orientation.
• When applicable, that you are trained and equipped for the specialized room for paint spraying etc.
   

Following the training, when can I access the HPL?

Access to the Heavy Prototype Lab is available from 8am to 10pm, 7 days a week. Please note, there must be two people in the shop at all times.

What machines can I use?

Machines available to students following their training session

• Hand grinders.
• Manual hand tools.
• Restricted access within Composite Lab.
• Can request that technicians perform tasks on equipment that students cannot use, so long as drawings are provided.

Machines operated by technicians only, but which you can request work be performed on

• Plasma Cutter.
• MIG & TIG Welding equipment.      
• Sand blaster.

How can students access the shop?

Team leads given key card access via banner numbers

• Proving full orientation of the shop, WHMIS, machine training, and proper PPE.

• Assuring that all team members working in the shop under their supervision understand the safety requirements of the space.

Composite Shop

Located inside the machine shop, the composite shop contains space to work with composite, non-metal materials.

What equipment is in the Composite Shop?

• A paint booth is available when booked in advance through the Shop Supervisor (Mark MacDonald).
• CNC CANCAM Router.
• A composite layup station can be used after informing the Shop Supervisor (Mark MacDonald) or a Technician of the project details

What can the machines do?

Machine Shop

Located next to the Heavy Prototype lab, the machine shop is a supervised area where students can use an array of interesting equipment to build their products.

Student Access Machinery:

Students must request time with the Shop Supervisor (Mark MacDonald) to complete Machine Shop Training along with a Safety Orientation prior to being provided access to the following equipment:

• Bandsaw
• Belt sander
• Bench Grinder
• Drill press
• Hand drill
• Heavy duty press
• Metal cut off saw
• Table saw
• Sheet Metal Punch

Following the training, when can I access the area:

Access to the Machine Shop is only available when the Shop Supervisor or a Technician is present.

Technician-restricted machinery:

• CNC milling machine 鈥� HASS VF2YT.
• CNC lathe 鈥� Tormach Slant Pro 15L.
• 4鈥� x 8鈥� CNC router is in a nearby room.
• Surface Grinders, lathes, & mills.

• Access to the Machine Shop is only available when the Shop Supervisor or a technician is present.

• 3D printing
• Laser cutting
• Vinyl/paper cutting

If your team is traveling to competition, you may be eligible for discounted car rentals through Communauto. Alternatively, if your team needs to transport your prototype for testing, or to competition, you may be able to use the faculty truck.
